The Royals have been quiet this offseason. Many fans are frustrated with the Royals for not being active in the free agent market. It’s important to remember that the Royals usually sign players that are in the middle of the market. For example, in 2019 the team went out and signed relievers Jake Diekman and Brad Boxberger. The Boxberger signing obviously didn’t work out for the Royals, but I think the Diekman signing worked out pretty well for Kansas City. The Royals were able to flip Diekman at the trade deadline and acquire a prospect from the Athletics. I believe a few relievers would fill the Royals bullpen needs, but I think a Blue Jays free agent would fit their bullpen perfectly and for a reasonable price. Rafael Dolis, in my opinion, would be a good one-year agreement for the Royals. Dolis will be 34 years old when the 2022 season begins. As a Royals fan, I understand why his age would scare people away, but the team is looking to add a veteran bullpen arm. Last season, Dolis struggled with the Blue Jays and only pitched in 39 games with a 5.63 ERA while only throwing 32 innings. The Royals are said to be looking for a left handed reliever, but I am not sure they will be able to find one for the right price. Although Dolis isn’t a left hander, I believe he could be an upgrade for the Royals bullpen. Before the 2021 season, Dolis had a great 2020. In 2020 Dolis posted a fantastic 1.50 ERA, however he only pitched in 24 games. While I believe the Royals should target him it’s important to point out that the Blue Jays designated him for assignment last season. Despite his struggles in 2021, I believe Dolis will receive a major league contract worth $3 or $4 million dollars. I believe the Royals will be more active in the reliever market in the next few weeks.
