Could Mychal Givens be a fit for KC?

Kansas City has been searching for bullpen arms all offseason but haven’t taken any action as of yet. I believe Mychal Givens could be a perfect fit for the Royals, but they might want to hurry and sign him with multiple teams rumored to be interested in him. Before we get into Givens’ stats, let’s not forget to mention that he takes pride in leadership role according to Charlie Goldsmith of Cincinati.com. I believe the Royals could benefit from his veteran presence in a young bullpen and in the locker room. The 31-year-old sidearmer has a good career ERA of 3.41. Givens had a great year in 2021 with a 3.35 ERA. Although the right-hander had a good season with the Rockies with a 2.73 ERA, the trade to Cincinnati wasn’t what he probably had hoped for, but it still wasn’t awful. While with the Reds, Givens posted a 4.22 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched. Last season the Rockies signed Givens to a one year deal worth $4.5 million dollars guaranteed. While I believe the Royals can afford Givens, I believe they might have to overpay him a little bit to bring him to Kansas City. The Phillies are rumored to be in talks with Givens according to NBC Sports Jim Salisbury. It’s important to point out that the relievers on this year’s free agent market aren’t the big names we’ve had in years past. I believe the Royals could sign Givens for $7 or $8 million dollars on a one year deal and put him right in the middle of their bullpen for the seventh or eighth innings of games. Expect the Royals to open up their wallets and spend more money on relievers than the past few seasons as they hope to build a competitive young team in 2022 and possibly reach the postseason with multiple prospects looking to make their major league debut next season.
