The bullpen has been a challenge for the Royals this season, but they do have a few good arms. The Royals acquired Domingo Tapia from the Mariners after he was designated for assignment on May 17. Tapia only appeared in two games for the Mariners this season. When the Royals acquired Tapia, I was a bit surprised they made this deal with the team looking to get younger; but the 30-year old has really shined in the bullpen for Kansas City. Tapia has a 3.07 ERA in 16 games. In my opinion, Tapia has pitched better than his stats have shown this year. The Royals have used Tapia in many situations throughout the course of the season, and he has stepped up. It’s important to point out that Tapia had a 4.11 ERA in the minors for the Mariners before joining the Royals. I believe the change of scenery really helped Tapia. With that being said, I believe he has really found his footing in the big leagues with the Royals. Heading into the off-season, the Royals will be obviously looking to make bullpen upgrades through free agency and the minor leagues; but I believe Tapia would be a great piece to bring back for the 2022 season when the team is looking to make a push for the postseason. I think the Royals could get Tapia on a team friendly deal for the upcoming season. While I am hopeful that the Royals bring him back, I also realize that the Royals will be looking to rely on their younger arms in the bullpen in 2022; but I think he could really give the bullpen a boost next season.
