Mondesi should transition to second base

The Royals believe that Adalberto Mondesi could become a super star in the big leagues at shortstop, but I don’t believe that has worked out for the Royals thus far. During Mondesi’s time in the big leagues he has been unable to stay healthy for long periods of time. I believe a position change could help him in many ways. Currently, Whit Merrifield plays second base for Kansas City; however, they have played Merrifield in the outfield a couple times in the past few years. The trade deadline is coming up in a little over a month, meaning the Royals will be looking to acquire young players for the future. The Royals have a few players that they might consider trading in Michael A. Taylor and Jorge Soler, leaving outfield positions open for players on the active roster to play like Whit Merrifield and Hunter Dozier. With Merrifield possibly transitioning to the outfield, the Royals could move Mondesi to second base on a permanent basis after his rehab assignment. The Royals have many options to take Mondesi’s spot at shortstop for the remainder of the 2021 season and parts of 2022 in Nicky Lopez, Hanser Alberto and Alcides Escobar. Most likely Lopez could handle shortstop on a regular basis. Why move Mondesi to second base? The 25-year old has been unable to stay healthy throughout his career at shortstop. I believe a switch to second base would keep him healthy in the long run; but, not only that, but I think Nicky Lopez would provide a defensive upgrade at shortstop for the Royals until Bobby Witt Jr. is ready for the big leagues.
