The New York Mets are in search of a new General Manager. They’ve interviewed many candidates over the past few months, and a former Royals pitcher got an interview, and an opportunity to become the Mets next General Manager. Who is this former pitcher you might ask? It’s Chris Young. Does that name ring a bell? Young played for many teams throughout his career including the Rangers, Padres, Expos, Mets, Mariners, Royals after getting drafted by the Pirates in 2000. Young called it a career in 2017 as a member of the Royals. He was a member of the Royals 2015 World Series team. After his playing career, Young took a role with Major League Baseball as the MLB Senior Vice President in 2018. Now in 2020, Young has an opportunity to be the Mets next General Manager. Chris Young getting this interview shouldn’t come as a surprise to many baseball fans who know his connections with the Mets organization. The 41-year old and his connection to Met’s Team President Sandy Alderson go back to their days with the Padres organization. The Mets have gone through many changes the past two seasons including a new owner, two managers, and are also in need of a president of baseball operations. Before Young got the interview with the Mets, the Mets had interviewed about six other candidates for the position. According to amny.com‘s Joe Pantorno, “Young carries a highly-regarded reputation, possessing an impressive baseball mind that many deem as a logical candidate to work in a team’s front office.” Despite Young’s lack of front office experience, I believe his experience as a player and as the MLB Senior Vice President could make him a solid choice for general manager with the Mets. For baseball fans from across the country, this interview might come as a surprise; but I think if Young gets the job with the Mets, he could surprise many people.
