On Monday, the Royals announced they have traded for outfielder Daniel Nava. The Royals will send either cash or a player to be named later to the Los Angeles Angels for the 33 year old left handed switch hitter.
Nava hit .235/.309/.303 in 45 games with the Angels in 2016, and his best season at the plate came in 2013 when he hit .303/.385/.445.
Nava does not count against the 40 man roster at this time, but he will probably be added when the Royals are able to expand the rosters for September beyond the 25 man. He will most likely not be here to contribute much more than outfield depth and veteran leadership, much the way Dayton has done in the last few seasons adding players like Jamey Carroll and Jonny Gomes, neither of whom contributed much on the field.
Nava does have a World Series ring from his days with the 2013 Boston Red Sox when they won the fall classic.
Nava has experience at both corner outfield positions, and also has 43 big league games at first base under his belt.
At the end of the day, should he be needed or manages to provide even the slightest veteran leadership, his addition will have come at very little expense. The Royals have assigned Nava to AAA Omaha for the time being, if for only a few days until September 1 hits.
