Back in 2010, the Royals selected Scott Alexander out of Sonoma State University in the 6th round of the 2010 draft. Alexander had turned down an opportunity to sign with the Cincinnati Reds back in 2007. After the Royals called up Alexander to the majors in 2015, he posted a 4.50 era in six innings over 4 games pitched. Three years later, Alexander was part of the three-team trade between the Royals, Dodgers and White Sox. As we all know, the Royals were looking to move Soria’s contract. As we look back on this deal, I think it is safe to say that the Royals didn’t win this trade as of now. The Royals acquired pitching prospect Trevor Oaks and utility player Erick Mejia in the deal. Oaks’ stay with the Royals didn’t last long. A year after being traded to the Royals, Oaks missed the entire 2019 season after undergoing a procedure on his right hip. In all honesty, I think the Royals should have kept Alexander for the future. Just imagine how much better the Royals bullpen could have been with Barlow, Alexander and Staumont. I think the Royals would have had a dominant bullpen. During his time with the Dodgers, Alexander has posted an ERA below 4.00 the past two seasons. Let’s just hope Mejia comes around for the Royals for them to gain anything from this deal.
