The Dodgers recently designated pitcher Yadier Alvarez for Assignment. The 23-year old posted a 14.73 era in Triple A Tulsa last season. Yes I know that is a high ERA but when the Royals called up Glenn Sparkman from Omaha he had a 63.00 ERA after returning from the Blue Jay’s organization in the rule 5 draft. Two seasons later Sparkman is a member of the Royals major league roster. Sparkman is just an example of what could happen if the Royals take a chance on a young pitcher like Alvarez.
If I were the Royals I would go out and get Alvarez! If the Royals were to get the 23-year old from the Dodgers they might have to give up cash. If the Royals did take a chance on Alvarez I could see him as a potential bullpen piece. If Alvarez doesn’t pan out in the majors he still has three minor league options remaining on his contract. Alvarez is just one of many young pitchers that were recently designated for assignment this spring. If I were the Royals I would take chances on players that were designated for assignment by teams through the season.
